Respite
Supports provide relief for primary care givers and the people they
support. Respite provides an excellent opportunity for individuals
to increase their participation in the community, to develop supportive
community relationships, to develop skills and abilities and to gain
greater independence.
In-home respite is
provided for adults (18 years or older), on a day, overnight or extended
basis in a number of settings outside of a parent, family member or host
family dwelling.
The Association
is subsidized to provide respite funding to adults who live with and
receive care and support from parents, other family members or host
families. A specific amount of subsidy provides respite designated
for adults who live with a family member or parent(s) where the primary
care giver is 55 years of age or older.
Respite
funding is provided at three levels based on the needs of the individual
as determined by the Association in consultation with the individual and
family. Individuals and families are asked to contribute $15 to
the purchase of respite care.
The
Association offers a fully accessible respite apartment as an
alternative option for families or individuals requiring short-term
relief. This apartment is fully equipped, including a hoyer lift
and a hospital bed. Families and individuals provide their own
food and care.
Special
Services at Home (SSAH) is a program offered by the Ministry of
Community Family and Children's Services. Like respite, SSAH plays a pivotal
role in maintaining natural supports. The Association works with
individuals and families to help them coordinate all supports and
services. SSAH, respite and other services and supports need to
work in concert to be effective.
The
Association maintains a list of potential respite workers and while it
may assist in locating potential candidates, families and individuals
interview, screen, hire and manage their own respite provider.
If you
are interested in opening your home to the possibility of providing
respite or are interested in providing respite in other locations,
please contact the Association's office.
